SolarWinds Hack Increases Focus on Third Party & Supply Chain Management

With the recent news of what could potentially be the biggest cyber-attack to date, many organizations are now rethinking its policies and procedures in place over managing and monitoring third parties and supply chain vendors (i.e. subcontractors, suppliers, equipment vendors, etc.).  For many years, financial institutions have been required to implement Vendor Management Programs to monitor and perform due diligence reviews for third parties.  However, BTG continues to encourage financial institutions to enhance its cyber management controls and due diligence process over its third parties.  To support this initiative, attached is a resource that includes specific considerations that can be applied to assess your third parties’ and vendors’ cybersecurity programs and controls in place.

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM), and this year’s theme is “Do Your Part. #BeCyberSmart.”

To help raise awareness about cybersecurity best practices, Buckley Technology Group (BTG) has identified 5 Ways that Credit Unions can be Cyber Smart.  You can find this resource attached here, and we encourage your organization to proactively take these steps to enhance your Cybersecurity and Information Security Programs.  Feel free to share this resource with your staff and colleagues to promote the importance of cybersecurity.  Show your involvement in promoting cybersecurity awareness by using NCSAM’s hashtag #BeCyberSmart during the month of October.

August 8, 2019 – Financial institutions are required to complete Security Awareness training at least annually; and while employee training is typically satisfied, many institutions fail to include Board members in required training. September 1, 2018 – BTG has partnered with KnowBe4, the world’s largest platform for security awareness training, to help clients manage the ongoing problem of social engineering. Utilizing KnowBe4’s simulated phishing platform, BTG will manage phishing campaigns through email and phone to test your employees’ ability to recognize and respond appropriately to social engineering threat indicators such as opening attachments, clicking on links, or sharing personal information over the phone. Failure points are immediately made aware to employees and automatically reported on, providing the ability to tailor training programs to each employee or business unit.
